Lunds universitet, MAX IV, MX group

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light. As a national laboratory, MAX IV is operated in agreement with governmental regulations, and in compliance with major funders such as the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the Wallenberg Foundation. 250 people are currently employed at MAX IV Laboratory, and 16 beamlines are funded. The facility is in a ramp-up phase with 3 beamlines now receiving users and 13 more scheduled to be commissioned and built to receive users within the next few years. The facility is dimensioned for 25-28 beamlines.

BioMAX – Macromolecular crystallography beamline
BioMAX is the first X-ray macromolecular crystallography beamline of MAX IV Laboratory, which is in user operations since 2017 and serves several user communities within our growing user program. It is a state-of-the-art facility, which is accommodating multiple cutting-edge experimental instrumentations. The beamline experiment set-up is highly automated, in terms of both sample handling hardware and data analysis, including feedback on the data collection.

FragMAX Project
Pharmaceutical research using rational drug design is directed towards developing new drugs as a major resource for public health. Within the FragMAX project we are aiming to develop and offer a facility to support experiments for this kind of research as well as for basic academic research. This includes the creation of large data-sets which needs to be stored, visualized and made accessible to the researcher. Therefore, we need to develop new software tools to facilitate this important research task.

Tasks:
You are developing, implementing, testing and using software tools for managing large dataset projects with 2+ TB’s per experiment. This requires the development and improvement of existing tools for data visualization, scientific data project management and automation of scientific data evaluation work flows. If possible, you will also be involved to developing, implementing and testing tools to support beamline automation tasks, which are related to the FragMAX project.

You are expected to work both, independently as well as in close collaboration with the BioMAX team, the MAX IV-IT and controls group and the industrial collaboration partners as well as other international collaborators and future FragMAX user communities.

Education and specialisation:
Undergraduate studies in computer science or software engineering. PhD in computer science, bio-informatics or master in software engineering or another relevant field. Previous experiences in working with large scientific data-sets are advantageous.

Qualifications:

Essential requirements:

  • PhD or master degree in relevant scientific field for the FragMAX project
  • Demonstrated experiences in Python and _javascript_ software development
  • Demonstrated experiences in SQL database development
  • Very good command of English, both written and spoken

Additional requirements are considered assets:

  • Web-application development using Django, React, Flask, Mongo
  • Scientific data management
  • Demonstrated knowledge in hardware controls

As a person we expect you to be flexible, structured, quality conscious, creative and can take initiative.
