SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) is one of the world’s premier research laboratories, providing an internationally leading capability in the form of its accelerator based light sources and its science programs. The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), a directorate of SLAC and the world’s first hard x-ray free electron laser, seeks a Project Scientist with a background in structural biology and data analysis methods to join the LCLS Hard X-Ray department. Members of this department are responsible for developing new instrumentation and methods as well as performing innovative ultrafast experiments using hard x-ray beams from LCLS. Within the HXR Department, a portion of the team focuses on structural biology experiment deployment, execution and capability development.
In this position, you will primarily support the development and integration of methods for structural biology, with a specific focus of data analysis methods. This will be done in partnership with the LCLS data systems team to improve the existing tools and develop new methods. In addition, you will support the user experiment program (primarily at the CXI and MFX instruments) and the use of methods and tools developed. You will participate in and contribute to efforts involving the online and offline data analysis tools and work towards the automation of the analysis workflow. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at SLAC and Stanford University. The successful candidate should be curious, motivated and self-driven.

Note: The position is a 3 year fixed term with the possibility of renewal. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding. The Associate Scientist is a 3 to 5 year fixed term research staff position.  Position is scheduled to be assessed after the 3 to 5 year period with the possibility of appointment to the Staff Scientist level.  Appointment to the Staff Scientist level requires a review and evaluation of documented scientific achievements. Applicants should include a cover letter, a statement of research including brief summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and names of three references for future letters of recommendation with the application.

To be successful in this position you will bring: 

	• A Ph.D. in physics, engineering, biochemistry, biology, or related field in demonstrated coursework and research experience with sample preparation, characterization and delivery.
	• Experience with complex data analysis of large data sets.
	• Experience in structural biology research at x-ray sources.
	• Demonstrated experience as evidenced by a publication record commensurate with level of work experience. 
	• Ability to carry out independent research. 
	• Strong analytical and experimental skills.
	• Effective written and verbal communication skills. 
	• Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
In addition, preferred requirements and experience include: 

	• Data analysis using Python and familiarity with Linux.
	• User facility operations and research.
	• X-ray crystallography, especially serial methods.
	• X-ray scattering techniques.
	• Experience in automation.
